Every year on April 25th, we join the global community to mark World Malaria Day. This yearβs theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must,” is a powerful reminder that while we have the tools to beat this disease, success depends on how we use them. In Uganda where malaria is common, it is easy to become casual about a fever or a headache, but getting your diagnosis right the first time is the most important step you can take for your health.

The Danger of the “Common” Guess:
When you or your child feels unwell, the immediate thought is often “it must be malaria.” Many people start treatment based on this hunch alone. However, viral flus, bacterial infections, and other tropical illnesses can look or feel exactly like malaria in the early stages. Taking malaria medicines when you don’t actually have the parasite doesn’t just fail to cure you; it can delay the treatment of the real problem and contributes to drug resistance.
Be Certain with an Accurate Diagnosis:
At The Surgery, we believe in providing treatment based on evidence. Our 24-hour onsite laboratory is equipped to provide definitive results in the shortest time possible. This allows our doctors to choose the most effective treatment plan for you, rather than a “one size fits all” approach.
Continuity through Technology:
Because we use a secure digital medical records system, your malaria history is always available to our clinical team. If you have had frequent bouts of malaria or have reacted poorly to certain medications in the past, any of our doctors can see that information immediately. This history helps us determine if you need a change in your prevention (prophylaxis) or if there are underlying health trends we need to address.
Prevention and Partnership:
Malaria is preventable and treatable. Whether you are a resident looking for long-term protection or a traveller needing advice on the right prophylaxis for your trip, we are here to help. Ending malaria isn’t just about medicine; it’s about making sure every patient gets an accurate test and the right support to finish their treatment.
