Medication Adherence: Why Completing Your Dose Matters
Happens to the best of us: you start a course of medicine for an infection or other health condition, and after a few days, you start to feel like yourself again. The temptation to stop taking the pills kicks in, or life gets busy and you start forgetting doses. It feels like the job is done because the symptoms are gone, but in reality, your body is still clearing the infection or stabilising. Stopping early often means the problem isn’t fully resolved, which can lead to it returning.
What happens if I stop when I feel better? It’s common to wonder why you should keep taking pills when you no longer feel sick. The reason is that symptoms—like fever or pain—usually disappear once the majority of the bacteria or virus is gone, but the most stubborn part of the infection often remains.
If you stop early, these remaining germs can multiply. Even worse, they can develop resistance, meaning the next time you get sick, that same medicine might not work at all. This is a major concern with antibiotics; finishing the full pack (as prescribed) ensures the infection is completely gone and protects your health long-term.
Making the decision together: We believe that your treatment should be a journey we take with you. If you are worried about why you’ve been prescribed a certain medicine, or if you are finding it difficult to keep up with the schedule, the best thing to do is talk to us.
Whether it is a concern about how the medicine makes you feel or just a busy schedule making it hard to remember, we can work together to find a solution and possibly explore different options that are safe and fit your lifestyle better. The goal is to make sure you feel supported in completing your treatment so that you stay healthy for longer.
